If you are a parent of tweens it is likely the Musical.ly App has made its way on to their phones and into your house. Until a couple weeks ago I was unaware of it. But a mom friend whose kids are younger than mine filled me in.
Considering I just finished reading American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers by Nancy Jo Sales (which I plan to write more about soon), Musical.ly sounds mild; G-rated even. But I know better. Not because all Social Media is evil, but because I know the real problem is in our hearts. It is there envy and pride grow and our desire for attention, acceptance and affirmation. This is where we must go – the root problems, the idols – when dealing with social media and all else with our tweens and teens.
For a better understanding, Rooted Ministry recently ran my article: Social Media Is Not the Real Problem taken from a presentation I gave to parents of teens at a Dallas church this past winter. I share with you below the links to both the article and audio from the talk. If you are apart of a group (Sunday school class, moms group, etc) you think would benefit from this message or another theme listed on my Scheduling page I would love to visit with you about making that happen.
