Quote from Paul Tripp’s Advent devotional Day 3. Made me think about how we as parents we live trying to be perfect. How we fear if we mess up, we will scar our kids. How we hide our insecurities and self-justify sin thinking we can’t let anyone see our sin, including our kids bc then they have an excuse to not be perfect🤷🏻‍♀️?! But God sees and knows we are weak and broken and loves us in spite of us. In fact, he delights to use us in our weak and broken form for his glory!!

Regularly when I speak I share that it was when I was stripped of my self-sufficiency and thinking I could control that I came to rest in his power and strength for me! “When I am weak, He is strong (2 Cor. 12:10).”

Moms & Dads, stop striving to be God and rather lean in to your need of Him! And allow your children to see your need for Him! In our imperfection and modeling a need for Jesus they learn it’s okay to not be perfect and in their imperfection God will meet them. To me, this is the HUGE AND HIGH CALLING: raising kids who know they need a perfect Savior for them!

Advent is here! December is busy but can we also intentionally slow?

It is a time to reflect on and rejoice: God is a God of mercy who set in motion from the beginning a way of redemption! All is grace. Let’s look for it!

Like having an attitude of gratitude, seeking to see grace changes us and grows our affection for God. But we miss grace—we miss God—when we are hurried and self-focused. Look up, Look out this season. See Grace everywhere, and by his grace start the new year more mindful of who He is and his promises. Remembering these things counters anxiety & despair and helps gird us with hope!

Each Thanksgiving we’ve done variations of shari

Each Thanksgiving we’ve done variations of sharing our gratitudes from the year with each other. One time throughout the whole month of November we hung leaves on a gratitude “tree” in the center of our table, but typically, I simply put construction paper leaves at everyone’s plate for the Thanksgiving meal. Everyone writes their gratitudes down and we then go around the table and share ours, which always leads to more stories.

What I really love is looking back over these year after year. I keep them together in a Ziploc baggie labeled by year (each leaf has their person’s name on it). We call these “memorial markers,” similar to the Israelites piling up stones to remember God’s faithfulness. Doing things like this help us remember & hold on to God’s promises!

It’s amazing how shifting our mind from complain

It’s amazing how shifting our mind from complaint to thanks—noticing what’s good and where God’s grace is present instead what’s not enough—changes how we feel! It changes us even if circumstances are hard. Changes our marriages, other relationships, our outlook and brain pathways! And in God’s economy, what we have outweighs what we don’t.

Lord, help us notice what is praiseworthy!

Today my daughter ran a half-marathon. But oh, it

Today my daughter ran a half-marathon. But oh, it was so much more than a race! It was a redemption run!!!

With her permission, her words about it:

“In highschool, running was my “thing”… but it was my “thing” bc it masked what my real thing was: being skinny. I ran for the sole purpose of burning more calories than I ate every day.

The day I ran my first half marathon, I don’t actually remember crossing the finish line because I was so malnourished; I hallucinated the entire last mile and passed out on the finish line. My mom carried me over the line—

I always told myself I would run another half when I got better — mentally and physically — today I stand on the other side of a 13 yr mountain of healing I climbed. It wasn’t linear - it’s been messy and slow but on the other side nevertheless.

Today I ran not to cancel what I ate, I ate so my body could do this & this time I remember the finish line!!!”

In part I share as a reminder that God is writing our children’s stories! I would’ve done anything to spare her the struggle and emotional pain and yet I wouldn’t undo the goodness in how He’s shaped her through it.

I also share bc in a different way this #eatingdisorder journey of hers became mine. God’s sanctifying work changed me as a mom (for the better) and it’s what led me to become a licensed counselor!

Lastly I share bc I’m just so proud of her💕!That feeling we have with our kids, it doesn’t change no matter how old they get. Nothing brings me more joy💕!

From Pastor John Piper:

“In Philippians 4:6, Paul says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” And then in Philippians 4:19 (just 13 verses later), he gives the liberating promise of future grace: “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

If we live by faith in this promise of future grace, it will be very hard for anxiety to survive. God’s “riches in glory” are inexhaustible. He really means for us not to worry about our future.”

So I think the prayer becomes—
Lord, grow my faith. Help me functionally to trust in you! And to accept what you see as my needs and how you will provide!
