I love when scientific research shows what God’s truth already declares! What we focus our mind on is powerful and I’m always so excited when someone who has started more intentionally focusing on what is praiseworthy experiences a shift in their overall well-being. So though it is a month we are naturally more focused on thanks, I encourage you to make thanksliving a habit, and help your kids do the same.

It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas🎄 (not at my house yet but around town!), and so you are prepared I am sharing these two recently released Advent devotionals I’m excited about!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know what a fan I am of Rooted Ministry—the Longing for Christmas book for your teens(!!) was a collaborative effort of a handful of Rooted writers. Simply addressing/punishing bad behavior will not lead to transformational change. We need to help our children learn to identify the roots beneath their behavior—what’s going on in their hearts. I give two ways here to help, but as parents we must understand our own hearts first!!

In my book Parenting Ahead I talk about understanding sin as idolatry and identifying ruling idols. Paul Tripp has been hugely, influential in shaping my understanding. Two of his books that I highly recommend are:
Age of Opportunity and Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands.

More is caught than taught! We parents need to lea

More is caught than taught! We parents need to lead the way in this bc the truth is it isn’t just teenagers distracted by their phones! We too short-circuit opportunity for relationship building conversations bc of our phones and busy schedules. And I’m as guilty as anyone🙋🏻‍♀️.

Research shows 1 in 4 adults to be lonely. Teens are too. Perhaps we start to change this by simply looking up and giving our attention to those we are with!

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to speak to

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to speak to a National Charity League group of mothers & their teen daughters (grades 7-12) at their annual tea. They had a garden theme which worked well with my topic of “Growing Garden Friends.” As a counselor I hear ALOT about friendship struggles and loneliness from all age people. Fits right with research that tells us collectively we are more lonely than ever before. And yet of course more connected (online).

While there are several factors, technology being a big one, these 3 Rotten Roots I proposed as part of the problem we feel loneliness and disconnected even in a crowd or among “friends.”

Hope this spurs some conversation around your table w family or friends. As always would love to hear your thoughts on these or other rotten roots you notice!
