I love in our culture today we are so much more aware of the importance of attachment needs of a child from birth and the long term implications. However, I also see parents living with fear that if they don’t do everything right their child will not grow up secure. I hope debunking these myths brings you a better understanding of what it is a child needs and self compassion when we don’t always get it right.

All month in my Bible reading the message has been clear: Do not fear! I am with you!

More than any other command this repeats throughout all of scripture. God knows we are prone to fear and faltering faith when we cannot see his goodness, make sense of our circumstances and/or feel out of control. But even to not fear and to trust in his promises is his grace to us. Therefore, Lord, would you help us know you are with us always, that we are safe in you?

This week I had the privilege of being a guest on Heather Creekmore’s Compared to Who? podcast sharing on a topic personal to me. In the first of the two episodes we discuss how the idols beneath our appearance/body image struggles can play out in parenting. In the second issue the conversation is centered on my journey alongside a daughter who struggled with an eating disorder with the hope of encouraging self-compassion & some equipping for moms who find themselves there now.

Start with “I’m sorry,” and ask God to help you live what you say is true—that your kids are priority, and that he would equip you to help them feel seen, heard & known!

Heard my friend Cameron Cole say this on a recent @rootedparent podcast. As parents we may think this but I can tell you as a counselor, our kids don’t always experience this as true! We must tell them again & again AND match our actions to our words bc how we respond tends to speak louder than what we say.

When they know these words true, we make ourselves safe for them to come to in their sin or struggles. Furthermore, when they know these words true they better believe this is what is true about God! Our standing before him is not about us in anyway, it is all Jesus’s doing—his obedience in our place. His righteousness is how God sees his children—nothing we do good or bad changes his love!
